As an essential component of the Ming Dynasty's military defense system, the Mutianyu Great Wall features unique defensive structures such as double-sided crenellations and the 'Eagle Flies Backward' section, which hold significant historical research value. Stretching 5,400 meters along the Yanshan mountain range, the wall preserves 23 watchtowers, including the Zhengguantai, a rare architectural layout consisting of three watchtowers standing side-by-side. The scenic area is divided into two routes: the western section extends from Watchtower 14 to Watchtower 22, passing through the steep 'Ox Horn Edge' and the uniquely shaped 'Jiankou' section; the eastern section runs from Watchtower 6 to Watchtower 1, where the Big Corner Tower offers views of the surrounding mountain landscape.
It is recommended that visitors take the cable car to Watchtower 14, explore the undulating western route first, and then walk down the eastern route on the return trip, where you can experience the toboggan slide at Watchtower 8. Compared to other popular Great Wall sections, Mutianyu better preserves the historical texture of the wall.
