  • The Humble Administrator's Garden was first built in the early Zhengde years of the Ming Dynasty (early 16th century). With a history of over 500 years, it is a representative work of classical gardens in the Jiangnan region. The name of the garden is derived from the 'Idle Living Ode' by Pan Yue of the Western Jin Dynasty: 'Cultivating the garden and selling vegetables to provide for morning and evening meals... this is also the administration of a humble person.' The original garden featured a style from the Song and Yuan dynasties. Despite multiple renovations, the ancient and leisurely atmosphere can still be faintly discerned, which is the most precious highlight of the Humble Administrator's Garden.

  • The Lion Grove Garden, along with the Humble Administrator's Garden, Lingering Garden, and Canglang Pavilion, is known as one of the 'Four Great Gardens of Suzhou'. Although the Lion Grove Garden is small, the rockery group inside is very famous. These strange rocks resemble dancing lions, and the paths between the rockeries are connected like a maze. You can count the stone lions and crawl through the stone maze to experience the fun of hide-and-seek. The Lion Grove Garden was first built in the Yuan Dynasty, originally as the back garden of a Zen temple, and was later purchased as a private residence. This garden was deeply loved by Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. He visited it every time he traveled to the south of the Yangtze River six times and once claimed that there were 500 stone lions in the rockery group. The garden still preserves the 'Zhenqu' plaque bestowed by Qianlong, and he even had the Lion Grove Garden replicated in the Old Summer Palace and the Chengde Mountain Resort.

  • Most of the buildings in Hanshan Temple are from the Qing Dynasty, mainly including the Mahavira Hall, the Sutra Library, the Bell Tower, the Stele Corridor, the Fengjiang Tower, and the Shuangzhong Pavilion. The architectural layout of Hanshan Temple does not have a strict central axis. The stone arch bridge in front of the temple gate is the Jiangcun Bridge, and the yellow wall between the bridge abutment and the temple gate is called the screen wall. There are two ancient camphor trees on both sides of the temple gate. Inside the yellow walls are classical pavilions with flying eaves; the one on the right is the Fengjiang Tower and the one on the left is the Shuangzhong Tower, both of which originate from the poem 'Night Mooring at Fengqiao'.

  • Shantang Street is named after the Shantang River. In the first year of the Baoli era of the Tang Dynasty (825), the poet Bai Juyi served as the Governor of Suzhou. He dredged the waterways northwest of the city and used the natural river channels to dig a straight canal (from the moat outside Changmen Gate to the foot of Tiger Hill), which was called the Shantang River to facilitate boat travel. The excavated mud was piled up to form a long embankment, which was wide enough to become a road leading directly to Tiger Hill. At that time, Tiger Hill was called Wuqiu, and there was a Wuqiu Temple on the mountain, so the poet referred to it as Wuqiu Temple Road. Later generations called it 'Bai Gong Embankment'. The embankment is seven 'li' long, hence it is also known as Seven-li Shantang. Because it is located between the bustling Changmen area and the famous Tiger Hill, it gradually became a prosperous tourist and commercial street.
