Prudhoe Bay

Access to Prudhoe Bay and the Arctic Ocean is restricted to oilfield workers and tour groups with special permits. Independent travel is not generally permitted due to its operational status as an active oilfield and its remote Arctic location.

Alcohol is not permitted in Prudhoe Bay. This policy is in place partly for safety reasons within the operational oilfield environment and partly out of respect for the cultural practices of the native communities in the wider Arctic region.

Prudhoe Bay is primarily known for being home to the Prudhoe Bay Oil Field, the largest oil field in North America and a significant contributor to Alaska's economy. It is a remote oilfield camp located above the Arctic Circle, known for its harsh tundra environment, extreme winters, and the phenomenon of midnight sun during summer. The landscape is vital for its oil production and supports unique wildlife, including caribou and beluga whales.

As of recent estimates, there are approximately 4 billion barrels of oil left to recover at Prudhoe Bay, with potential for more through technological advancements. The field originally contained about 25 billion barrels, with over 16 billion barrels considered recoverable. Although production has decreased from its peak, Prudhoe Bay remains a significant U.S. oil field.

Prudhoe Bay is situated in a harsh Arctic tundra environment characterized by extremely cold winters and a unique summer with 24-hour daylight, known as the midnight sun. The landscape is vital for oil production and hosts diverse wildlife adapted to these challenging conditions.
