Binan

Historically, Biñan has gained recognition nationwide for being part of the life of José Rizal, one of the country's national heroes. In June 1869, when Rizal was a child, he traveled to Biñan with his brother Paciano. They moved into his aunt's home, which would serve as their lodging, near the town proper.

The name Biñan in Laguna comes from the Hispanicized corruption of binyagan, the Tagalog word for "baptismal place." This reflects the deep influence of Spanish colonization and Catholicism in the region's history.

Accompanied by his older brother Paciano, Rizal traveled to Biñan, where he would study Spanish and Latin under Maestro Justiniano Aquino Cruz. They arrived in Biñan after riding in a carromata for one and a half hours and proceeded to their aunt's house, where Jose would be staying.

The city is also known for a type of pancake made from rice flour, topped with cheese or butter, famously called Puto Biñan. The best-known makers of Puto in Biñan City are located in the barangay of San Vicente, that's why the city is renowned as "The Home of the Famous Puto Biñan in Laguna."

Biñan is historically significant as a place that played a role in the childhood of national hero José Rizal. His time spent in Biñan studying and living with his aunt highlights the town's importance in shaping his early life and national consciousness.
