Tenryu-ji Temple

Temple's Hojo, the main building, is a masterful example of Japanese style; its painted sliding doors and intricate wooden carvings are nothing short of stunning. A visit to the temple is an absolute must for those with an interest in Buddhism, Japanese history, or traditional Japanese architecture.

Plan to spend 45 minutes to two hours at Tenryu-ji Temple, depending on your interest in its gardens and historic buildings, with a one-to-two-hour visit allowing for a relaxed exploration of the gardens and main halls. For a more comprehensive experience that includes other nearby sights like the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, allocate at least half a day to the area. Focus on the Zen garden, the main hall, and the Sogen Pond for a good overview of the temple's key features. Take more time to appreciate the serene atmosphere, walk through the various parts of the garden, and explore the historic buildings like the main hall and Dragon Painting Hall.

Tenryuji Temple requires two separate admission fees: 500 JPY for the Garden and 300 JPY for the Temple Buildings (including the Hatto/Dharma Hall, which features the Cloud-Dragon Painting). To see the Cloud-Dragon Painting in the Dharma Hall (Hatto), you must pay the additional fee for that specific building, which is separate from the garden fee. Fees for adults (high school students and older) are 500 JPY for the garden and an additional 300 JPY to enter the Honden (main hall) and other buildings within the complex. Elementary and middle school students pay 300 JPY for the garden and 200 JPY for the buildings. Preschoolers are free.

Visiting Tenryu-Ji is affordable, which makes it a great stop on your trip. To enter the temple grounds and garden, the admission fee is 500 yen. If you're curious and want to go inside the main building, called the Dharma Hall, there's an extra fee of 300 yen. Tickets can typically be purchased at the entrance.
