Nihonmatsu

Nihonmatsu pines are known for their deep trunks and dense needles, often called 'black pines.' They also have the reputation of 'white bud pines' due to their gray-white tender buds. This unique color contrast adds to their distinct ornamental value.

To ensure healthy growth of Nihonmatsu pines, it is recommended to provide full sun, requiring about 5 to 8 hours of light daily. For watering, once a day is recommended in summer, and about every two days in winter. However, the most important thing is to observe the soil's moisture and adjust accordingly, avoiding overwatering or waterlogged soil.

Nihonmatsu pines prefer well-draining environments. Therefore, it is recommended to use breathable granular soil, such as hard akadama soil. Repotting is usually done in winter, and a small amount of compound fertilizer, like 'Omyao' fertilizer, should be applied during this period to support their growth.

When Nihonmatsu pines are dehydrated, their leaves may become dry, brittle, and even appear weak and limp. This is one of the direct indicators to determine if watering is needed. It is essential to replenish water promptly, while also ensuring the soil does not remain excessively moist for long periods.

To determine if a Nihonmatsu pine bonsai needs watering, you can observe the soil surface, feel the pot's weight, and check the leaf condition. When the top 2 to 3 cm of soil is dry, it's time to water. If the pot feels significantly lighter, or if the leaves show signs of dryness and limpness, it indicates that watering is needed.
