San Chao refers to the celebration on the third day after a baby's birth, an important day in traditional customs. A bathing ritual is usually held for the newborn, symbolizing a peaceful arrival.

In the past, to celebrate the 'San Chao' (the third day after birth), a formal bathing ritual was performed. A round stone was placed in the bathtub, and the stone was lightly touched to the baby's head and chest, symbolizing 'making courage'. This ritual is called 'doing San Chao'.

San Chao Hui Men, also known as Gui Ning, refers to the newlywed couple returning to the bride's family on the third day after the wedding, accompanied by the husband. They bring a suckling pig and gifts to pay respects to ancestors, report their safety to the parents, and then return to the groom's family.

Besides referring to time, the character 'Chao' in ancient times was also used for feudal lords visiting the Son of Heaven (like tribute), referring to the place where the monarch heard cases and handled affairs (like the imperial court), the reign of a monarch (like the Han Dynasty), or paying respects to deities (like pilgrimage).
