Basilicata is famous for the UNESCO World Heritage site of Matera, with its ancient Sassi cave dwellings, and is known as a hidden gem in Italy for its less-crowded and authentic cultural experiences. The nearest airport to Basilicata is Bari (BRI). However, there are good options for getting to Basilicata. Autolinee Liscio operates a bus from Napoli - Capodichino Aeroporto to Potenza - Viale del Basento 3 times a day. Tickets cost €9 - €14 and the journey takes 2h 40m.

Its inhabitants are generally known as Lucanians (Italian: lucani), and to a lesser extent as basilicatesi or by other very rare terms. In ancient times, part of its territory belonged to Magna Graecia, subject to coastal Greek colonies (including Sybaris). Later the region was conquered by the ancient Romans.

Basilicata is not part of Puglia. Basilicata is bounded by the regions of Puglia to the north and east, Calabria to the south, and Campania to the west. Basilicata is roughly divided into a western mountainous section, dominated by the Appennino Lucano, and an eastern section of low hills and wide valleys, while along the Ionian Sea the sand and clay hills overlook narrow coastal areas.
