Sahel

The Sahel is a vast semi-arid transitional zone in North-Central Africa, situated between the vast Sahara Desert to its north and the lush Sudanian savannas to its south. This expansive region stretches across the continent, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea. It encompasses parts of numerous countries, including Senegal, Mali, Niger, Chad, and Sudan, and is characterized by its distinctive dry grasslands and a landscape that gradually shifts from desert conditions to savanna environments.

Three historically and culturally important cities in the Sahel are Agadez, a vital hub on the historic trans-Saharan caravan routes in northern Niger; Bamako, the vibrant capital of Mali; and Khartoum, the expansive capital of Sudan and the largest urban center in the region.

The Sahel is defined by its semi-arid climate and a unique landscape of dry grasslands or steppes, dotted with thorny shrubs and scattered trees. While it receives more rainfall than a true desert, it remains a relatively dry environment, marking a clear transition from the harshness of the Sahara Desert to the more verdant savannas further south.
