Magnetic Island got its name from Captain James Cook in 1770. He believed the island interfered with his ship's compass, causing it to act erratically. He documented that his compass behaved strangely and would not travel well near the island, leading him to conclude that iron deposits were the cause. He named it 'Magnetical Island' based on this perceived magnetic effect. Although later tests showed his theory to be incorrect, the name has remained.
