Product Info
- The Marugame Uchiwa fan began to gain popularity over 400 years ago as a souvenir for pilgrims visiting Konpira Shrine. A key feature of the Marugame Uchiwa is that it is crafted from a single piece of bamboo through 47 distinct steps. Today, it is designated as a National Traditional Craft and accounts for 90% of the domestic market share. This is a special program where you will learn about its history and experience 5 characteristic steps of the process under the guidance of a master craftsman. ~ Experience Flow ~ 10:00 / 13:00 Introduction of the craftsman Reception starts 10 minutes before the experience. The craftsman will introduce themselves and explain the process. ⇩ 10:10 / 13:10 History Watch a promotional video explaining the history of the Uchiwa fan. ⇩ 10:25 / 13:25 Weaving Tie thread to the bamboo to weave the ribs. ⇩ 10:40 / 13:40 Pasting Apply glue to the paper and attach it to both sides of the bamboo frame. ⇩ 10:50 / 13:50 Demonstration of splitting and 'momi' (rubbing) experience Watch a demonstration of bamboo splitting by the craftsman and try the most difficult step, 'momi'. ⇩ 11:10 / 14:10 Finishing Cut the fan into shape with a sickle and attach the edge trim to finish.
