COEDA HOUSE is an all-glass cafe designed by world-renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Guided by the idea of 'creating a building that looks like a large tree by assembling small branches,' Kuma utilized glass for the exterior and incorporated mirrored furniture to create a design that blends seamlessly into the rose garden. This concept allows the architecture to meet the rose garden, resulting in a space that resonates with nature.
The name 'COEDA HOUSE' is derived from 'CO' (meaning to call or gather) and 'EDA' (branches), representing a large tree formed by small branches. 'COEDA' also carries the meaning of 'people gathering together.' The building utilizes the 'expanded resin anchor method,' which provides structural strength by securing timber with steel reinforcement through resin, a feature that remains hidden from view.
Furthermore, to support the structure of COEDA HOUSE, 49 layers of 800-year-old Alaskan cypress were stacked, using 1,500 pieces of wood for the pillars. By stacking small pieces of wood—ranging from 80cm to 12m in length—the structure appears as a single, massive tree. African teak is used for the flooring, allowing visitors to enjoy the warmth and scent of solid wood.
