Mt. Yotei is a stratovolcano, characterized by its conical shape formed by layers of lava and ash. While there are no current signs of eruptions or fumaroles, it is classified as an active volcano by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Its last known eruption occurred approximately 3,000 years ago. Its symmetrical form has earned it the nickname "Ezo Fuji".
The Japanese name "Yotei" (羊蹄) literally translates to "sheep's hoof." This name is believed to come from the mountain's resemblance to a sheep's hoof or cloven foot when viewed from certain angles. Historically, the indigenous Ainu people of Hokkaido referred to it as "Makkarinupuri," which means "mountain around which a river flows," referring to the Shiribetsu River that originates from its slopes.
Mt. Yotei is often called "Ezo Fuji" due to its remarkably similar, nearly perfect conical shape to Mt. Fuji. Both are stratovolcanoes and iconic landmarks. However, Mt. Yotei is located in Hokkaido, while Mt. Fuji is on Honshu island. While both are significant, Mt. Fuji is taller and more globally recognized. Mt. Yotei offers a more secluded and tranquil experience, set against Hokkaido's pristine natural backdrop, visible from locations like Makari Spring Water Park.
The Japanese name for Mt. Yotei is 羊蹄山. In Japanese, it is pronounced as "Yōtei-zan." The "Yō" has a long 'o' sound, and "zan" is the Japanese word for mountain. It stands as a prominent and beautiful symbol of Hokkaido's natural landscape.
Mt. Yotei is renowned for its strikingly symmetrical, near-perfect conical form, earning it the nickname "Ezo Fuji." Its solitary peak makes it a dominant and easily recognizable feature in Hokkaido's landscape. The mountain is surrounded by pristine nature, offering breathtaking panoramic vistas, especially when viewed from places like Makari Spring Water Park, which showcase its grandeur and the region's pure environment. It's also famous for its pure spring water.
At Date Jidaimura, visitors can step back in time to Japan's Edo period. The park offers opportunities to dress in traditional Edo attire, watch exciting live performances by ninjas and oiran, and explore a meticulously recreated ancient street. You can wander through samurai residences and merchant shops, immersing yourself in the culture, entertainment, and daily life of that historical era.
Lake Toya Onsen Town provides a relaxing setting by the caldera lake. From the observatory, visitors can enjoy magnificent panoramic views of Lake Toya, its distinctive islands, and the surrounding volcanic terrain. This spot is perfect for appreciating the serene waters, lush mountains, and unique geological formations that combine to create a stunning natural spectacle, ideal for scenic photography.
Makari Spring Water Park is celebrated for its natural spring water that flows directly from Mt. Yotei. Visitors can taste this remarkably pure and fresh water at its source. The park also serves as an excellent vantage point to enjoy spectacular, unobstructed views of Mt. Yotei. It offers a tranquil environment to appreciate Hokkaido's natural beauty and the majestic presence of the mountain.
