Located on the Karasuma Peninsula by the shores of Lake Biwa, the Lake Biwa Museum is a comprehensive museum where you can 'understand Lake Biwa with your body.' Lake Biwa is one of the largest lakes in Japan and is known as an ancient lake with a history of approximately 4 million years. Through clear exhibition planning, the museum takes you on a journey to fully understand this 'Mother Lake,' from its formation and natural environment to the historical changes in how people have lived along its shores.
The museum also features an aquarium where you can see the 'living state' of Lake Biwa's creatures, including observations of ecosystems that include various endemic species. It is a rare comprehensive museum in the country that combines natural history, human history, and aquarium displays. There are also interactive exhibition spaces that allow you to explore with your five senses, enabling both children and adults to learn and discover through interaction.
Aquarium Exhibition Room 'The Lake Today and Us - Aquatic Creatures and Life -': The museum houses one of Japan's largest freshwater aquarium displays, introducing the creatures of Lake Biwa and the relationship between people and the lake.
