The Bernina Red Train traverses a UNESCO World Heritage route, renowned for its dramatic alpine landscapes. Passengers can admire panoramic views, including glaciers, towering peaks, and deep valleys, especially as it crosses the 2,200m-high Bernina Pass. It's an iconic journey that provides a unique perspective of the Swiss Alps, connecting different cultures and landscapes.
The Bernina Red Train refers to the regular regional train service operating on the Bernina Line, which is also used by the Bernina Express. The main differences are that the Bernina Express typically uses dedicated panoramic cars with larger windows and requires a seat reservation, often incurring an additional supplement. The Bernina Red Train uses standard carriages, which may not have the same panoramic windows but offer the identical scenic route and flexibility for local travel.
On the Bernina Red Train, first class typically offers more spacious seating with fewer passengers per carriage, often configured in a 2+1 arrangement, providing greater comfort and larger windows in some cases. Second class has a 2+2 seating arrangement, which is more compact. Both classes offer access to the same stunning views along the UNESCO World Heritage route, with the primary difference being comfort and personal space.
The Bernina Red Train journey itself, specifically the section from Tirano to St. Moritz (or vice versa), typically takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. Along this route, it traverses the iconic UNESCO World Heritage track, crossing engineering marvels like the Brusio Circular Viaduct and ascending to the 2,200m-high Bernina Pass, offering breathtaking views of glaciers, mountain lakes, and alpine scenery. The route is famed for its unassisted adhesion track, climbing steep gradients without cogwheels.
During a day trip to St. Moritz, visitors can explore its elegant town center, famous for luxury boutiques and sophisticated ambiance. Key activities include strolling along Lake St. Moritz, enjoying the fresh alpine air, and admiring the stunning mountainous backdrop. There are also opportunities to visit local galleries, take a leisurely walk through charming streets, and soak in the atmosphere of this renowned resort town before rejoining your tour.
Visitors to St. Moritz can easily explore its main attractions on foot, including a leisurely walk around parts of Lake St. Moritz and through the town's elegant center. Key areas like Via Serlas, known for its shops, and the scenic lakeside promenades are accessible. For a comprehensive stroll taking in the main highlights and enjoying the atmosphere, allocating approximately 1.5 to 2 hours is generally sufficient during a typical day trip.

It's significant for its unique blend of Italian and Swiss influences, offering visitors a chance to explore its medieval streets, historical buildings, and experience local Italian life before or after their scenic train journey into the Swiss Alps. It's a charming contrast to the alpine landscapes.
