Created between 1495 and 1498, by Leonardo da Vinci, and located on the wall of the refectory of the Santa Maria delle Grazie church in Milan, this painting depicts the biblical scene of Jesus' last meal with his twelve disciples before his betrayal. Da Vinci's innovative technique involved using a mixture of tempera and oil on drywall, rather than traditional fresco. This resulted in less stable pigments, which caused the work to begin flaking soon after its completion. Over the centuries that followed, "The Last Supper" endured: numerous wars and bombings (particularly during World War II, when it was nearly destroyed); and numerous restorations, the last of which was a 21-year restoration in the late 20th century, restoring it to its present state. This painting has become a symbol of "art reborn"—its ability to survive destruction and time. Viewing it is truly groundbreaking.
I've learned a lot and will definitely travel to Italy next time! It's hard work, but it's worth it.
