— What You Can Expect —

Stepping back to the past with a visit to “Wat Ket Karam”, one of the old temples was built in 1482, located along Ping River which was an important commercial area in those days.

The trip will take you to explore the temple and its museum to understand the simplicity of northern Thai culture and Buddhism through antiques and old photos. Then, ambling along the riverside heritage path to absorb the sense of the past from the building along the riverside which reflected combinations between Lanna and Chinese with Western architecture.

Then, walk across the footbridge to Warorot Market, the largest fresh market in the city, all traditional and local products can be found. You will walk around the market including seeing the local vibe and getting an authentic feeling and learning the culture of the locals. Continue the trip by traditional trishaw called Samlor, a symbol of Chiang Mai's way of life. Pedal at low speed along with the open views to roam along Thapae Road through the old city, walls, and moat to the sense of sights and sounds of Chiang Mai city.

Finally, you will cap off an awesome day with a local lunch before heading back to the hotel with full of memories.

FAQ

1. How does taking a traditional trishaw ride compare to other ways of getting around Chiang Mai?

A traditional trishaw offers a unique, leisurely way to experience Chiang Mai. Unlike faster options like tuk-tuks or ride-hailing services, trishaws provide an open-air, slower pace, allowing for better sightseeing and interaction with the environment. It's ideal for short distances, especially within the Old City, and offers a glimpse into local culture and heritage, making it more about the journey than just the destination.

2. Can I use ride-hailing apps like Grab for a traditional trishaw experience in Chiang Mai?

Typically, ride-hailing apps such as Grab do not feature traditional trishaws. These rides are usually arranged directly with the trishaw driver on the street, or through specialized tour operators focused on authentic local experiences. While Grab is widely available for cars and scooter taxis in Chiang Mai, it's not the platform for booking a traditional trishaw.

3. What is the typical cost difference between a traditional trishaw ride and a tuk-tuk in Chiang Mai?

Traditional trishaw rides are generally priced similarly to or sometimes slightly higher than tuk-tuks for comparable distances, as they offer a more personalized and unique cultural experience. Prices are typically negotiated with the driver beforehand. While both are local transport options, the trishaw emphasizes a slower, more immersive journey compared to the faster, more utilitarian tuk-tuk.

4. Is taking a traditional trishaw ride a safe and convenient option for exploring Chiang Mai at night?

Taking a traditional trishaw at night in Chiang Mai can be a safe and charming experience, especially in well-lit, busy areas like the Night Bazaar or around the Old City gates. Drivers are usually familiar with popular routes. It offers a relaxed way to enjoy the evening ambiance. However, it's always advisable to negotiate the fare upfront and confirm your route before starting your journey.

5. What kind of authentic local experience can I expect from a traditional trishaw ride in Chiang Mai?

A traditional trishaw ride provides an intimate view of Chiang Mai's daily life. You'll move at a pace that allows you to observe street vendors, local architecture, and bustling markets up close. It's an opportunity to interact with local drivers, who often share insights about the city and its culture, offering a more personal and immersive journey compared to faster modes of transport.

6. How can I book a traditional trishaw ride in Chiang Mai?

You can easily book a traditional trishaw ride in Chiang Mai through platforms like KKday. Booking in advance through KKday offers the convenience of securing your ride, often with pre-planned routes that highlight key attractions, and ensures a reliable and authentic experience without the need for on-the-spot negotiation, allowing you to simply relax and enjoy the journey.

7. What are the typical routes or durations for a traditional trishaw ride in Chiang Mai?

Traditional trishaw rides in Chiang Mai often focus on routes within the Old City, visiting temples, markets, and historical sites. Common durations range from 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on the chosen route and how many stops are made. Many rides can be customized to explore specific areas like the bustling Warorot Market or the serene Wat Phra Singh.

8. Which areas or attractions in Chiang Mai are best explored by traditional trishaw?

The Old City of Chiang Mai is ideally suited for exploration by traditional trishaw. Its narrow streets and numerous temples, such as Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh, are perfect for a leisurely ride. Areas around the Thapae Gate, Warorot Market, and the riverside also offer scenic routes where a trishaw allows for immersive sightseeing at a comfortable pace.
