- Required Documents for Car Rental -
- Required Documents: Passport, original driver license, Japanese translation, and International Driving Permit (issued by an authorized agency in a 1949 Geneva Convention signatory country, following the Geneva Convention format).
☆The International Driving Permit is valid for 1 year from the date of issue (please check the issue date). Driving in Japan is permitted for 1 year from the date of entry (please check the entry stamp in your passport).
If you use the automated gate at immigration, your passport will not be stamped. An entry stamp is required for car rental (for identity verification). Please ensure you request a stamp from an immigration officer after passing through the automated gate. For those holding a Japanese Certificate of Residence, re-entry into Japan within 3 months does not reset the start date for driving in Japan.
International Driving Permits issued by countries signatory to the Paris Convention (1926), Washington Convention (1943), or Vienna Convention (1968) are not recognized in Japan. Permits issued by unauthorized agencies, even in Geneva Convention signatory countries, are invalid. Permits that deviate significantly from the Geneva Convention format are also invalid.
☆For license holders from Switzerland, Germany, France, Taiwan, Belgium, Monaco, or Estonia, you may drive in Japan for one year from the date of entry by presenting your original license and its Japanese translation. Please bring these two documents and your passport to the rental office.
☆The Japanese translation must be issued by the respective country's embassy/consulate, the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), or JDL (Japan Drivers License). If you hold a Taiwanese driver license, please apply for a translation through JAF or the Taiwan-Japan Relations Association. The validity for driving in Japan is 1 year from the date of entry (please check the entry stamp in your passport) or until the foreign license expires, whichever is shorter. For those holding a Japanese Certificate of Residence, re-entry into Japan within 3 months does not reset the start date for driving in Japan.
☆Travelers from other countries must hold an International Driving Permit and their passport to drive in Japan.
