  • Tateyama Kurobe Alps: Stroll through the Snowy Valley (Plans A and B only)

Explore the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Road tour by trying various transportation methods. Each year, as winter ends, the National Park closes the mountain in late November due to heavy snow, reopening in mid-April or early May the next year, which lets people rediscover this beautiful place. Take all 6 different modes of transportation to complete your Alpine quest and enjoy the site through diverse routes. Witness the towering "snow wall" of Tateyama, over 20 meters high in early spring.

★ Murodo and Midagahara remain covered with snow in spring. Please prepare waterproof shoes or rain boots for mountain travel and sunglasses as the white snow can be blinding.
  • Tateyama Kurobe Alps: Summer Resort Mikuriga-ike Pond, Shomyo Waterfall (Plans C and D only)

Experience summer's beauty as trees grow and snow melts into Kurobe Reservoir. Join outdoor activities like sightseeing, climbing, and walking. Head up to Murodo, the highest spot, for sightseeing tours. Visit the lovely Mikuriga-ike Pond for an hour-long walk. Enjoy the calm lake, reflecting mountains, for an unforgettable time.
Due to its 12–15 degree lower temperatures, Murodō offers plenty of remaining snow for visitors or touch or even walk on snow

  • Shōmyō Waterfall

Marvel at Japan's tallest waterfall, standing at a towering 350 meters, as it pours down the river. See the creation of Hannoki Falls, reaching a height of 500 meters, when the thick snow melts in spring. Take the Kogen Bus from Tateyama Station to get close to this waterfall. Catch a different view of Shomyo Falls from a resting area or observation deck on your journey.

★ The Tateyama Kurobe climbing area is a mountainous region reaching heights of 3,000 meters, where temperatures greatly differ from those on the ground. Even in midsummer, the Alps serve as cool summer resorts. Given the particularly strong mountain sun, it's advisable to prepare long-sleeved clothing to shield yourself from both the sun and the cold
  • Tateyama Kurobe Alps: Murodo, Midagahara (Plans E and F only)

Admire the gradual change of color in the red and yellow leaves from the top of the mountain to its foot from September to early November. The Tateyama Alpine Route serves as a tourist destination with a significant altitude variation. Enjoy the lush green mountains at the bottom, the maple leaves adorning the slopes, and the snow-capped peaks.

★ As maple leaves fully bloom, some might start feeling chilly. By October, snow falls in Murodo, so wearing extra layers is wise to stay warm.

2. What is the meaning and significance of the name Kamikochi?

The name Kamikochi literally translates to "The Highlands Where Gods Descend." This reflects its profound natural beauty and spiritual significance. Shirakawa-go is renowned for its distinctive gassho-zukuri farmhouses, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site. These traditional houses feature steeply-slanted thatched roofs, designed to resemble hands clasped in prayer ("gassho"), capable of withstanding heavy snowfall. This unique architectural style also provides large attic spaces for sericulture. The village offers a glimpse into a traditional Japanese way of life, preserved for centuries amidst beautiful rural landscapes.

4. What does the name Shirakawa-go signify in Japanese?

The name Shirakawa-go (白川郷) translates in Japanese to "White River Village" or "White River Old District."
