For my 2026 cherry blossom viewing trip, I flew directly from Taiwan to Hakodate. I bought ferry tickets at Kkday first, and then exchanged them for boat tickets directly at the pier – it was really convenient. The cherry blossoms at Hirosaki Castle in Aomori were in full bloom at the same time.
Driver was very kind, I was suprised it was a lady driver. Telling us hours of stay acceptable in each destination. Though I realized that 10 hours was not enough to cover all destinations. We made it just in time.
Two suggestions: 1. Arrive at the cafe above before 4 PM to have lunch and wait for the sunset, especially in winter when it's windy and cold outside. 2. Avoid peak hours when going up the mountain; it's recommended to go after 7 PM to avoid the crowds taking the cable car down.
Yoshi was surprisingly good at speaking english. we did not have a hard time communicating with him. he brought us to all beautiful places within Toya. highly recommended!
