Product Info

  • The Kujo-kan, located in the gardens of the Tokyo National Museum, is a historic room associated with the Kujo family, one of the five regent families, and is not usually open to the public. Originally built at the Kujo residence within the Kyoto Imperial Palace, it was later moved to its current location in the gardens in 1934, after serving as a separate residence for the Kujo family in Akasaka. It will be specially opened for this workshop. This is a 60-minute authentic calligraphy experience in this special space, where you will face the brush and ink. You will learn about the origins and background of hiragana, katakana, and kanji characters, and practice basic brushwork with characters such as "三" (three) and "川" (river). Afterwards, you will choose a character you would like to write, practice it using a model, and then finish by writing and stamping it on either a fan or a shikishi (square paper board) of your choice. You can take home your completed work along with the model and the paper you used for practice. We will confirm the spelling of your name in advance and provide a model for writing "your name" in katakana and hiragana. The instructor is calligrapher Yoshun Teranishi, who runs the Shinjuku Kagurazaka Calligraphy Classroom Atelier Kakko. Having pursued the path of calligraphy since the age of 8, she received the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award at the 87th Shodan-in Exhibition. A certified calligraphy professor at the Shodan-in, she also has 10 years of experience as a Japanese language teacher, and excels at teaching characters to beginners. The goal is not to simply copy the model; rather, it's to create "your own characters" that reflect each individual's personality. The instructor and two assistants will conduct the session primarily using simple English and demonstrations, with Japanese participants receiving guidance in Japanese. Participants from both Japan and abroad are welcome. Whether you've never held a brush before or haven't done so in a while, please enjoy the session at your own pace.
  • Direct instruction by calligrapher Teranishi Hajun, recipient of the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award.
  • A calligrapher who won the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award at the 87th Shodan-in Exhibition will provide direct instruction. Drawing on 10 years of experience as a Japanese language teacher, they will carefully explain everything from the origins of the characters.
  • Held exclusively on October 23, 2026, at the normally closed Kujo Hall.
  • The historic "Kujo-kan" is a traditional Japanese room associated with the Kujo family, one of the Five Regent Houses. This building, which is usually closed to the public, will be specially opened for this workshop.
  • All artwork can be taken home, so you can come empty-handed.
  • In addition to your finished artwork, which will be written and stamped on a fan-shaped shikishi (decorative paper board), you can also take home sample paper and practice sheets. Each session is limited to a maximum of 15 participants, and solo participants are welcome.
