Begin your day with a visit to the city’s biggest open-air market, located in the neighborhood of Pateles, a few minutes away from the city center of Heraklion. Walk around the dozens of stands and be greeted by the friendly merchants who offer their products at very good prices and are willing to give you a taste. Shop around like the locals do and try the high-quality products of the Cretan soil.

Next, head to the city of Heraklion. Take a guided tour to the major landmarks that the city has to offer. As Heraklion flourished under a multicultural influence, there is a plethora of Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman structures to look out for. Pass by the famous Venetian-style Morozini fountain, a landmark for locals and visitors alike. Admire the church of Agios Titos, built in 1872, and the Venetian Loggia dating back to the 16th century.

Enjoy some free time to walk until the beautiful port of Heraklion and visit the Koules fortress, one of the strongest fortresses built by the Venetians.

In your last stop at the palace of Knossos, take a guided tour of the biggest palace of the Minoan times.
Excavated by Sir Arthur Evans in 1900, Knossos is the “home” of the great Minoan civilization that flourished from c. 3000 BC to c. 1450 BC. Walk around the ancient rooms, and the courtyard, and learn about King Minos and the mythical Minotaur. Entering the archaeological site is optional.
If you choose to enter, the admission ticket (€20) is not included and is paid on-site.
