If you want more than just sightseeing—if you want to understand Prague and its place in European history—this tour is perfect for you. You’ll see the city through a unique lens that connects local stories with broader cultural and historical themes. The tour is available in English, Russian, and French.
The itinerary starts at Prague Castle (which is not a castle) with an overview of its history and key events in 1000 years of Prague history. We have a look at the most valuable exterior sights (which are not St Vitus facade), and, after enjoying the iconic view of Malá Strana roofs optionally continue to Hradčany, a "hidden gem" frozen in time. Here we recall Prague of Rudolf II, that of arts and science, "alchemists and magicians". Descending through Malá Strana, we enjoy views of its gardens and houses, imagining how it was 300 years back, and turn heroic pages of Czech history - Hussite wars or times of Charles IV, an unparalleled creator. St Nicholas Church and Wallenstein Palace bring up another layer of stories - Thirty Years' War and re-Catholization. Then Charles Bridge is on our way. 300-meter stretch is packed with unique views, and every step tells a story. After crossing the bridge (and having learnt how to recognize St John of Nepomuk), we head to the Old Town and Jewish Quarter. Here, we'll see the Old-New Synagogue which has stood there for 750 years and has remains of Golem in the attic, and fascinating Neorenaissance architecture. At the Old Town Square, we'll check time on the famous Astronomical Clock, dating back to 1410, and see the Estates Theater, tightly bound with the name of Mozart, and Charles University - older than Astronomical Clock and the cradle of first Protestant movement in Europe. We may see then the Black Madonna House and Municipal House - outstanding examples of Cubism and Art Deco, and, through Fruit and Coal Markets (literal street names) we'll get to the Wenceslas Square, the center of modern Prague, the major site for shopping and revolutions.
The tour runs in small groups, not more than 8 people. There is always a chance that it will be private, and for groups of 6+ people I make it such. Pace and itinerary are adjusted for you. If the group is in the mood to walk more and see more, it can be up to 10 kilometers. If not, we can leave out some segments and concentrate more on hilltop views, conversations or make some coffee stop. I do not have a scripted scenario, I have a hat full of stories and broad overview of European history and Prague's place in it. And the thing I enjoy and invite everyone to participate is live conversation, which sheds unexpected light on worn-out things.
The duration is 4 hours. This is a fully outdoor walking experience; interiors are not included unless access is free and adds value to the tour. If you have special wishes on timing or itinerary or anything, message me.
The tour is a comprehensive introduction to the "tourist map" of Prague, culture and history.
