Product Info

What was everyday life really like in communist Czechoslovakia? This two-hour small-group tour explores the system from the inside: how propaganda, censorship, surveillance, shortages and everyday compromises shaped ordinary life between 1948 and 1989.

Meet your guide in front of the National Museum at the top of Wenceslas Square. Begin with the communist takeover of 1948 and see how the regime presented itself in public space. As you continue down Wenceslas Square, use the events of 1968 and Jan Palach to understand the limits of control and the consequences of resistance.

At Jungmannovo náměstí and the former Party press buildings, explore propaganda, censorship and the official language of the regime. Continue through the city to look at the practical reality behind the political system: shops, queues, housing, work and the restrictions that shaped daily choices.

At Bartolomějská, learn how the StB secret police operated and how surveillance, informers and fear affected society. Period photographs and documents are shown along the route so you can compare today's Prague with the city people experienced before 1989.

Národní třída brings the story to the police crackdown of 17 November 1989 and the beginning of the Velvet Revolution. From there, cross toward Újezd, where the tour ends at the Memorial to the Victims of Communism.

Your guide Hanka combines documented history with a personal perspective: she lived in Czechoslovakia before 1989. The group is limited to 8 guests, leaving time for questions, discussion and a deeper look at how people adapted to life under the regime.
