Located in the garden of the Tokyo National Museum, the Kujokan is a historic, normally off-limits reception hall associated with the Kujo family, one of the five regent families. Originally built within the Kyoto Imperial Palace, it was moved to the Kujo family's villa in Akasaka before being relocated to its current garden site in 1934. In this special space, you will enjoy a 60-minute lesson where you will hand-craft two seasonal Nerikiri sweets. As you work, you will learn about the meanings behind the designs and the reasons for each step of the process. To finish, you will enjoy your freshly made Nerikiri alongside brown rice tea prepared by the instructor. Your instructor is Miyuki Shuari. Since opening the Simply Oishii Wagashi School in Meguro Ward in 2014, she has been teaching Wagashi in English for 12 years. She has instructed over 10,000 students and established the Wagashi Promotion Association Japan in July 2023. The lesson is conducted by Ms. Shuari herself in English, with a Japanese-speaking assistant present, ensuring a comfortable experience for Japanese guests as well. This is a small-group session (maximum 12 people), creating an environment where the instructor and assistant can provide attentive support. Enjoy a quiet moment crafting seasonal Wagashi while inside this historic building that is usually only viewed from the outside.

Inside the normally off-limits Kujokan
The Kujokan is a historic building associated with the Kujo regent family. You will have the special experience of entering this usually closed-to-the-public hall.

[Meeting] Tokyo National Museum Kujokan. The classroom is a tea house located in a lush, green garden. Reception will also be held here.
Wagashi making experience (approx. 30 minutes). You will make seasonal Wagashi (Nerikiri) with the instructor. Since you will be following the instructor's demonstration, even beginners can create beautiful Wagashi.
Time to serve and taste the Nerikiri and tea. Enjoy a relaxing moment with your handmade Japanese sweets and brown rice tea.

・By car: There is no parking available for visitors at the Tokyo National Museum. If you are coming by car, please use a coin-operated parking lot in the Ueno Park area. ・By train: Approximately a 10-minute walk from JR Ueno Station (Park Exit), a 15-minute walk from Tokyo Metro Ueno Station (Exit 7), and a 15-minute walk from Keisei Electric Railway Keisei Ueno Station. After entering through the main gate, proceed toward the Honkan (Japanese Gallery) and Toyokan (Asian Gallery) to find the garden entrance, where the Kujokan is located. ・Other methods: If arriving by taxi, please get off at the main gate of the Tokyo National Museum. Large luggage such as suitcases cannot be brought into the museum, so please use coin lockers at Ueno Station in advance.
