  • Located on a hill on the east coast of Awaji Island overlooking the gentle coastline, Onokoro Ai is a rare indigo dyeing center in Japan, where everything from organic cultivation of indigo plants to fermentation dye production and traditional indigo dyeing is carried out on the same site. The Onokoro Ai / AWAJI Indigo LAND Project preserves the culture of indigo dyeing for the future through a year-round process of sowing seeds in spring, harvesting in summer, and fermenting and preparing in winter. This special indigo dyeing experience is limited to one group and is completely private. Through a tour of the indigo fields, which change appearance with the seasons, you will witness the cultivation of Onokoro Ai indigo plants, learn about the traditional Japanese fermented dye "sukumo" and the indigo dyeing process, and then experience authentic indigo dyeing using "living indigo." The indigo dyeing solution is cultivated using only natural ingredients, such as Awaji spring water, wood ash supernatant, and wheat bran, using the power of microorganisms. Indigo is a "living dye" that changes its appearance in response to environmental changes such as temperature, humidity, and weather, making it a unique color that is never reproduced twice. In this experience, you will use the "Onokoro Indigo" cultivated in this way, and spend time dyeing while facing the indigo. Experience the once-in-a-lifetime experience of indigo dyeing, encountering a one-of-a-kind color. The view of the blue sky and sea from the window is the very image of the deep blue of indigo dye. In this tranquil environment, you can feel connected to nature and enjoy quiet time creating something. After the experience, we will serve you special indigo tea made with organically grown indigo. As you savor the lingering aroma of the dyeing experience, experience with all five senses the lifestyle and culture that indigo embodies.
