When experiencing hot springs in Japan's Jozankei, nude bathing is the general custom. Before entering the bath, be sure to thoroughly wash your body in the shower area. Swimsuits are not allowed in the bathing area, and you should avoid dipping your towel into the hot spring pool. If you have long hair, it is recommended to tie it up. Please maintain quiet while bathing, and do not wash your body or use soap in the pool to preserve the hygiene of the pool and the bathing experience for others.
The most convenient way to travel from Sapporo city to the Jozankei Onsen area is by bus. You can take the Jotetsu Bus from the bus terminal next to Sapporo Station; several routes go directly to Jozankei, with a journey time of approximately one hour. Additionally, some hot spring inns in Jozankei offer free or paid shuttle services from Sapporo city. It is recommended to confirm this with the inn when booking your accommodation.
The peak viewing period for autumn leaves in Hokkaido's Jozankei region is typically from early to late October each year. During this time, the areas around Jozankei Dam and Hoheikyo Dam, as well as the hot spring town, are painted with layered colors of red, yellow, and orange from the maple leaves, creating a stunning scenery. As the timing of the fall foliage is influenced by the weather, it is advisable to check the latest local foliage forecast before your trip.
Mt. Yotei's Natural Water Park is renowned for its clear, sweet natural spring water, which is groundwater formed by melted snow from Mt. Yotei seeping into the earth. The water quality is pure and refreshing. Visitors can directly taste or collect this pristine spring water here, experiencing its unique crispness. The park's surroundings are serene, making it a great place to connect with nature and relax, and it is also a beloved natural spot for locals.
The area around Hoheikyo Dam is a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves in the Jozankei region. In autumn, the entire reservoir is adorned with a spectacular intermingling of red and yellow foliage. It is recommended to admire the lake and the maple trees on both banks from the dam bridge; the reflection of the leaves in the emerald green water is particularly captivating. You can also take an electric bus into the dam's interior area to appreciate the contrast between the autumn colors and the reservoir from different angles. The surrounding walking trails are also excellent vantage points.
The most recommended way to view the active craters of Showa Shinzan and Lake Toya is by taking the Usuzan Ropeway. The ropeway will transport you to the summit, where you can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the magnificent Lake Toya from the observation deck, and get up close to the breathtaking volcanic landscapes of Showa Shinzan and Usuzan's active craters. This is an excellent experience that allows you to appreciate the volcanic scenery without much effort, while also taking in the beauty of the lake and mountains.
Jozankei Onsen town, in addition to its abundant hot spring facilities, is also ideal for leisurely strolls and exploration. You can visit the 'Jozan Gen-sen Park' to learn about the origin of the hot springs and enjoy a free foot bath. Strolling along the Toyohira River to admire the autumn foliage or the lush green scenery on both banks is also a great pleasure. The hot spring town also has local specialty shops and restaurants where you can sample Hokkaido cuisine or buy souvenirs.
