The Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival is one of Tokyo’s most iconic summer events, with a rich history that dates back to 1733, during the Edo period.
In 1732, Edo (modern-day Tokyo) was struck by a severe famine and plague, leading to the death of many citizens. The following year, Tokugawa Yoshimune, the 8th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, ordered a fireworks display over the Sumida River as part of a ritual known as the Water God Festival. The purpose was to mourn the dead, pray for peace, and lift the spirits of the people during those dark times. From that moment on, the tradition of summer fireworks was born.
Revived in its modern form in 1978, the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival is now held every late July, featuring a spectacular display of approximately 20,000 fireworks lighting up the Tokyo night sky. The event draws over a million spectators each year and is considered one of the Three Great Fireworks Festivals in Japan. For many, it is the most romantic night of Tokyo’s summer.
This year marks the 49th edition of the modern Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival.
