In recent years, we have been experiencing what could be called a "Japanese art boom." In the past, Japanese art was less popular than Western art. However, the situation has been gradually changing since the turn of the century. The person who has undoubtedly led this "Japanese art boom" is the Edo period painter Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800). The "200th Anniversary of His Death Special Exhibition: Jakuchu" held at Kyoto National Museum in 2000 triggered an unprecedented "Jakuchu boom," and the "300th Anniversary of His Birth Commemoration Jakuchu" exhibition held at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in 2016 attracted an astounding 460,000 visitors. However, before 2000, Jakuchu was an "unknown treasure trove" of Japanese art to the general public.

Since the 2000s, hundreds of thousands of people have flocked to Japanese art exhibitions that display many famous works. Once the COVID-19 pandemic is over, attention to Japanese art will continue to grow, and a number of exhibitions displaying national treasures and important cultural properties are being planned. However, this "Japanese Art Treasures: Search for the National Treasures of the Future" exhibition is not planned to feature already well-known works. It is an exhibition planned with the desire to have many people see Japanese art as an "unknown treasure trove," including works that have received little attention until now, and works that some researchers have studied diligently but are little known to the general public.

The works on display span a wide range of eras and genres, from the Jomon period to the present day. Take Jomon pottery, for example. Several pieces were finally designated national treasures in the 1990s, but there are many others that should be designated as such. There are also highly unique and fascinating paintings from the Muromachi period, although they are not generally known. And while much progress has been made in unearthing "painters of the imagination" such as Jakuchu from the Edo period, there are still many wonderful works that are virtually unknown. Furthermore, there are many "undiscovered treasures" lying dormant in paintings and crafts from the Meiji period onwards.

We planned this exhibition with the hope of unearthing this treasure, having many people look at it, and having the audience discover with their own eyes the "national treasures of the future." The Osaka-Kansai Expo will be held in 2025. We hope to take this opportunity to spread the appeal of Japanese art to even more people.
