Jiufen is renowned for its rich history as a former gold mining town, narrow alleys, traditional tea houses, and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Key attractions include Jiufen Old Street with its vibrant food stalls and craft shops, Shengping Theater (Taiwan's oldest movie theater), and the intricate architecture reminiscent of bygone eras.
Jiufen is widely believed to be a major inspiration for the atmospheric setting of Hayao Miyazaki's "Spirited Away." While Studio Ghibli hasn't officially confirmed it, the town's red lanterns, narrow staircases, and traditional architecture bear a strong resemblance to scenes from the film, drawing many fans to experience its unique charm.
To reach Jiufen from Taipei, popular options include taking a bus directly from MRT Zhongxiao Fuxing Station (Bus 1062) or Taipei Main Station (Bus 965). Alternatively, you can take a train to Ruifang Station and then transfer to a local bus (Bus 1062, 788, 825, 827) or a taxi to Jiufen Old Street. Private car services or guided tours also offer convenient transfers.
To fully experience Jiufen Old Street and its immediate vicinity, including sampling local snacks, browsing shops, and soaking in the atmosphere, a typical visit lasts around 3 to 4 hours. However, those wishing to explore nearby attractions like the Gold Museum or engage in a leisurely tea ceremony might extend their visit to a full day.
An overnight stay at Jiufen's Kokonoe Town guesthouse allows for a unique experience of the town after day-trippers have left. You can enjoy quiet evening strolls along the lanterns-lit alleys, savor dinner with a tranquil view, and wake up to explore the mystical town in the peaceful morning, capturing its essence without the crowds.
In the evening, Jiufen transforms with the glow of red lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere, particularly along Shuqi Road and around A-Mei Tea House. Visitors can enjoy traditional Taiwanese dinner, participate in tea ceremonies, or simply wander the illuminated streets, experiencing a quieter, more enchanting side of the town.
While Jiufen Old Street operates into the evening, offering many food stalls, souvenir shops, and tea houses, it is not a typical bustling night market in the same vein as those found in larger Taiwanese cities. The focus is more on traditional snacks, local crafts, and its unique cultural ambiance rather than a dedicated night market section.
For convenience when arriving or departing, some Jiufen overnight tours offer airport transfer options. This allows travelers to be picked up directly from Taoyuan (TPE) or Songshan (TSA) airports and transferred to Jiufen. This feature streamlines travel, letting you begin or end your tour effortlessly on the same day as your flight.
