The Great Buddha existed from the beginning, but the Great Buddha Hall was designed by Tadao Ando as a project to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the opening of the Makomanai Takino Cemetery. From the outside, only the head of the Buddha can be seen in the center of a round hill, and it was named 'Atama Daibutsu' (Head Great Buddha) because of its impressive appearance. The Head Great Buddha can be enjoyed in different scenes throughout the four seasons, but the most recommended season is from late July to early August when the lavender is in full bloom. Lavender is planted in a spiral pattern all over the hill surrounding the Head Great Buddha, creating a magnificent purple vortex in the summer. A stroll while wrapped in the rich fragrance will surely be a scene of memories that will remain in your heart forever.
