-Tourist Spot Introduction-

  • World Heritage Site: Kumano Sanzan

The three shrines, Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha, are known as the Kumano Sanzan. The Kumano Sanzan are located in the southeastern part of Wakayama Prefecture, 20 to 40 km apart from each other, and are connected to each other by the Kumano Kodo (Kumano Pilgrimage Route) Nakahechi. The three shrines originated from individual nature worship, but the main deities of the three shrines were mutually enshrined and came to be worshipped as the Kumano Sansho Gongen.

  • Seiganto-ji Temple

Mount Nachi was founded as far back as 1,600 years ago during the reign of Emperor Nintoku (313-399) by an Indian monk, Rakkei Shonin, who is said to have been washed ashore at Kumanoura Bay and reached Nachi Falls, where he became enlightened by the Kannon Bodhisattva after undergoing rigorous training. About 200 years later, during the reign of Empress Suiko (593-628), a temple was built and Shobutsu Shonin came from Yamato to enshrine the Nyoirin Kannon Bodhisattva.

  • Nachi Falls

Deep in Nachi, the waterfall flows from the Okumotori mountain range, and there are said to be 48 waterfalls in the entire mountain range, with Nachi Mitaki being the one with the largest drop. This waterfall, also known as Ichinotaki, is 133m high, 13m wide at its mouth, and 10m deep at the base of the waterfall, and it is said that the amount of water falling is about 1 ton per second.
