Sounkyo Onsen is renowned for its natural hot springs, stunning scenic beauty, and its position as a gateway to the Daisetsuzan Mountains. Visitors can enjoy relaxing baths amidst picturesque gorges and dramatic cliffs, especially beautiful during autumn foliage. It's also famous for nearby waterfalls like Milky Way and Ryusei.
The difficulty of hiking Kurodake varies. While the Sounkyo-Kurodake Ropeway offers easy access to the 7th station, making it accessible for many to enjoy views, actual hiking to the summit beyond that point requires proper gear and experience. The trails can be steep and rugged, especially towards the peak, making it a challenging climb for novice hikers.
The Sounkyo Ice Waterfall Festival is a spectacular winter event held annually in Sounkyo, transforming the gorge into an illuminated wonderland of ice. It features massive ice structures, tunnels, and sculptures created from the frozen waterfalls and river water. Visitors can explore these icy creations, enjoy light-up displays, and experience the magical atmosphere of Hokkaido's winter.
The Sounkyo-Kurodake Ropeway provides an effortless way to ascend from Sounkyo (at an altitude of 670m) into the Daisetsuzan Mountains. From the ropeway and its upper station, visitors are treated to breathtaking panoramic views of the Sounkyo Gorge, the vast Daisetsuzan mountain range, and especially vibrant autumn foliage during the fall season.
The coral grass community at Lake Notoro is best viewed in autumn, typically from mid-September to early October. During this period, the plants transform into a deep crimson carpet, creating a truly spectacular and unique natural phenomenon. This vibrant display makes for an unforgettable autumn scene.
From Cape Notoro, visitors can enjoy expansive panoramic views of the surrounding natural landscape. To the west, you can clearly see Lake Notoro and the coast of Tokoro Town. To the north, the vast Sea of Okhotsk stretches out, while to the east, the majestic Shiretoko Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop.
The Milky Way Waterfall (Ginga no Taki) and Ryusei Waterfall (Ryusei no Taki) are two prominent waterfalls in the Sounkyo Gorge. Milky Way Waterfall is characterized by its delicate, flowing strands of water resembling threads, while Ryusei Waterfall is known for its powerful, single stream cascading down the cliff, often compared to a shooting star. Both are stunning natural spectacles.
The Abashiri Prison Museum offers a unique glimpse into the history of Japan's penal system and Hokkaido's development.
