Hamajima, or Phantom Island, is a sandbar primarily composed of coral fragments that appears and disappears with the ocean tides. It is a transient, pristine white sand island emerging from the turquoise sea. Its shape and size constantly change due to ocean currents, making each visit a unique experience.
Phantom Island (Hamajima) is a remote sandbar accessible only by boat. Tours typically depart from major ports on Ishigaki Island, such as Ishigaki Port. These boat tours often combine the Hamajima landing experience with snorkeling in the surrounding coral reefs.
Phantom Island (Hamajima) is a natural sandbar that is fully submerged during high tide. As the tide recedes, the pure white sand gradually emerges, forming an island. During low tide, a significant portion of the island becomes visible, allowing visitors to land and explore its unique landscape.
The term 'Phantom Island' for Hamajima is not rooted in traditional local lore or a mythical origin story. Instead, it refers to its ephemeral nature. The island's constant appearance and disappearance with the tides, alongside its ever-changing shape due to natural marine processes, gives it this evocative name.
Yes, shuttle service is included for participants of the Phantom Island (Hamajima) tour. This convenient service is specifically provided for those staying in the southern area of Ishigaki Island, offering transportation to and from the tour's departure point.
The snorkeling experience near Phantom Island (Hamajima) is highly recommended for beginners due to its calm, clear, and relatively shallow waters. The area is rich in vibrant marine life and coral reefs, providing an accessible and enjoyable environment for those new to snorkeling. Equipment rental is also typically included.
The primary method of travel from Okinawa main island (Naha) to Ishigaki Island is by air.
