- Sightseeing Spot Introduction -

【World Heritage: Kumano Sanzan】

① Kumano Nachi Taisha ② Kumano Hayatama Taisha ③ Kumano Hongu Taisha

The three shrines of 'Kumano Hongu Taisha,' 'Kumano Hayatama Taisha,' and 'Kumano Nachi Taisha' are collectively known as the 'Kumano Sanzan.' Located in the southeastern part of Wakayama Prefecture, each shrine is separated by 20 to 40 km and connected by the 'Kumano Kodo Nakahechi' pilgrimage route. While each shrine originated from individual nature worship, they eventually came to be worshipped together as the 'Kumano Sansho Gongen' by mutually enshrining the main deities of the three.

【Nachisan Seiganto-ji Temple】

Nachisan was founded 1,600 years ago by the Indian monk Ragyō Shōnin. It is said that after drifting ashore at Kumano Bay and reaching Nachi Falls, he attained enlightenment of Kannon Bosatsu through rigorous ascetic training. About 200 years later, the main hall was built, and Shōbutsu Shōnin from Yamato entered the mountain to enshrine the Nyoirin Kannon.

【Nachi Falls】

The water flowing from the Okunachi and O-kumotori mountain ranges forms the Great Falls. It is said that there are 48 waterfalls throughout the mountain, known as the 'Nachi 48 Falls,' and among them, the one with the greatest drop is the Nachi Otaki (Great Waterfall). Also called the 'First Waterfall,' it stands 133 meters high, with a width of 13 meters at the basin and a pool depth of 10 meters; the volume of water falling is said to be about 1 ton per second.
