Liouguei District

Liouguei District is an administrative district of Kaohsiung City, located in the northeastern part of Kaohsiung City.

The indigenous people of the Kaohsiung Liouguei area are mainly the Da-wu-lung people, who are Pingpu ethnic groups that migrated to Liouguei, Laonong, and other places during the Ming-Zheng period to escape Han Chinese immigration and the Siraya tribe. Some areas in Liouguei District still retain rich Da-wu-lung culture, such as the Laonong tribe, where the villagers hold a night festival on the fifteenth day of the ninth lunar month to pass down their culture.

Liouguei District has many attractions worth visiting, such as the magnificent Xinwei Bridge, the beautiful mountain scenery of the Eighteen Arhats Mountain, and Baolai Hot Springs where you can soak in hot springs and enjoy flowers. In addition, Liouguei Buddha is also an important local landmark.

There are several theories about the origin of the place name Liouguei. One theory is that it is named after six giant rocks in the Laonong Riverbed that resemble turtles, the largest of which is called 'Turtle King Rock'. Another theory is derived from the transliteration of the indigenous Pingpu tribe's Lakuri community (Mangziman Society). Historical documents record that early Liouguei was called 'Liouguei Li', and it was later changed to 'Liouguei' during the Japanese colonial period.

Liouguei District boasts rich natural landscapes. The Eighteen Arhats Mountain, with its continuous peaks, is comparable to the landscape of Guilin and is a must-visit for photography enthusiasts. In addition, Xinwei Bridge is also a popular photo spot recently, with its design echoing the imagery of the Purple Crow butterfly.
