Product Info

Aschaffenburg is nicknamed the "Nice of Bavaria" for a reason: a mild climate, vineyards by the river, a Renaissance castle overlooking the Main, and an old town that can be explored on foot in 90 minutes. That's exactly what we do on this walking tour.

We start at Johannisburg Castle, the city's red landmark made of Bunter sandstone. Here, you will learn why the Mainz prince-electors chose to reside here and what that meant for Aschaffenburg. From the Schlossufer, the view opens up over the Main to the Pompejanum and the vineyard – the best photo stop of the tour.

The route then takes you through the Old Town. You will see the Collegiate Basilica of Saints Peter and Alexander, the oldest building in the city, and find yourself in alleyways where half-timbered buildings, post-war modernism and contemporary architecture jostle right next to each other. It is precisely these contrasts that tell the real story: from the ecclesiastical residential city to the destruction in 1945 to the city of today.

Along the way, you won't be bombarded with dates, but rather with stories: about electors and craftsmen, about things that almost everyone here knows and hardly anyone writes down. Questions are very welcome, the pace is relaxed, and the route is easy to manage on foot.

By the end, you will not only know the landmarks, but also where it is best to stop for a bite to eat afterwards and what is worth doing for the rest of your stay.
