What is the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel?

Kiyotsu Gorge is ranked as one of Japan's three great gorges, alongside Kurobe Gorge in Toyama and Osugidani in Mie. The gorge is lined with hexagonal columnar joints formed by the cooling and contraction of magma approximately 7 million years ago, and it was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument in 1941. The Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel opened in 1996, allowing visitors to explore the gorge in a safe environment. In 2018, as part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field, the tunnel was redesigned by MAD Architects (Ma Yansong) into the art installation 'Tunnel of Light'. A new entrance facility with a footbath was added, and in 2021, a new work was added at the second observation point, making it one of the most iconic spots in the Echigo-Tsumari region.

What can you see at the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel?

The 750-meter-long tunnel takes about 30 to 40 minutes to walk round-trip. Along the way, there are three observation points where you can view the gorge and the columnar joint rock walls from different angles. The second observation point even features a restroom transformed into a mirror art installation reflecting the scenery, a hidden highlight of the tunnel. At the Panorama Station at the end, a shallow layer of water creates a 'water mirror' that perfectly reflects the rock walls, the stream, and the sky. As people walk through it, it feels like stepping into a living painting. The fresh green of spring, the autumn foliage, and the winter snow each offer a unique charm, making it a must-visit spot for photography enthusiasts.

Should I choose the General Ticket or the Common Pass First-time Special plan?

Both plans are entry tickets for designated peak season reservation-only dates; they offer the same experience but at different prices. If you only plan to visit the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel, please select the 'General Ticket'. If you have already purchased or intend to purchase the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field '2026 Echigo-Tsumari' Common Pass, you may choose the 'Common Pass First-time Special' plan to enter at a discounted price. This is limited to one-time use, and you must present both the Common Pass and this entry ticket upon admission. For subsequent visits, please purchase a general ticket.
