Svalbard and Jan Mayen year round climate
Spring (March–May): Average -16°C to -3°C. Extremely cold climate, dry air, deep snow cover. Daylight hours significantly increase, with polar day even beginning. Rainfall is very sparse. Common activities: Snowshoeing, wildlife observation (seals, polar bears), still opportunities to see the Northern Lights in March and early April. Recommended attire: Polar-grade warm clothing, layered dressing, windproof and waterproof jacket and pants, warm hat, scarf, and gloves.
Summer (June–August): Average 4°C to 10°C. Relatively mild and cool climate, the warmest season of the year, but still on the cold side. Dry climate, extremely low rainfall. During polar day, there is ample sunlight. Common activities: Hiking, boat tours, kayaking, wildlife viewing (birds, whales, reindeer), exploring settlements. Recommended attire: Warm base layers, waterproof and windproof jacket, sturdy hiking boots, hat and gloves, sunglasses.
Autumn (September–November): Average 2°C to -8°C. Temperatures rapidly drop below freezing, transitioning into the cold winter. Dry climate, with occasional snowfall. Polar night begins, and the Northern Lights reappear. Common activities: Northern Lights viewing, early autumn hiking, dog sledding, snowmobile tours (late autumn). Recommended attire: Polar-grade winter clothing, layered warm dressing, windproof and waterproof outer layer, warm boots.
Winter (December–February): Average -15°C to -11°C. Extremely cold climate, the coldest season of the year. Completely enveloped in polar night, with almost no daylight. Extremely dry climate, covered in snow. Common activities: Northern Lights viewing, dog sledding, snowmobile expeditions, ice cave exploration, experiencing the unique atmosphere of polar night. Recommended attire: Expedition-grade winter gear, multiple layers of warm clothing, thermal underwear, thick down jacket and pants, balaclava, thick gloves, warm boots.
