Since we weren't driving, we opted for a day trip. It involved a bus with a driver and a staff member (not a tour guide). The bus had barcodes that could be scanned with your phone, and you could listen to the audio guide after enabling location services (remember to wear headphones). As some people mentioned, some attractions were so comfortable you might want to linger, but it was still a very good trip. You could consider it a way to familiarize yourself with the sights before driving yourself and exploring at a slower pace. The dolphin show at Koh Mei is often packed, so I recommend arriving early. American Village is huge and has a fireworks show, making it a great place to stay overnight, as you can get on and off the bus there directly. The staff member, Kim Yenshao (I think that's how it's spelled?), seemed very dedicated and attentive, and spoke multiple languages (English, Korean, and Japanese).
