Step inside Vatican City and discover the Necropolis of the Via Triumphalis, one of Rome’s most fascinating ancient burial grounds. Located along the slopes of Vatican Hill, the necropolis preserves an exceptional collection of Roman tombs and evidence of ancient funerary traditions.

Follow a knowledgeable guide through the archaeological site and see individual and family tombs decorated with mosaics, frescoes, stucco, marble, and funerary inscriptions. Learn why Roman law required burials to take place outside the city and how ancient families honoured and remembered their deceased relatives.

Please note that this visit explores the Necropolis of the Via Triumphalis. It is not the Vatican Scavi Tour beneath St. Peter’s Basilica and does not include the Tomb of St. Peter.
