Takachiho Gorge is one of the most iconic natural landscapes in Takachiho. It features columnar joint cliffs formed by volcanic activity from Mount Aso, stretching along the Gokase River to create a unique canyon landscape. The most famous sight is the Manai Falls, which cascades down from the cliffs and is considered one of the most representative views of Takachiho Gorge. The official tourism association has also listed Manai Falls among the Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan.
The Takachiho Amaterasu Railway was created using the facilities of the former Takachiho Railway, which is no longer in operation. The round trip between Takachiho and Takachiho Iron Bridge covers about 5 kilometers. The open-air SUPER CART is pulled by a power unit fueled by biodiesel, and the entire round trip takes about 30 minutes. Ride this popular sightseeing train to travel through the valley along the old Takachiho Railway route and enjoy the magnificent natural scenery of Takachiho from a different perspective.
Amanoiwato Shrine is an important shrine related to the Japanese mythological legend of 'Amanoiwato'. It is dedicated to deities associated with the sun goddess Amaterasu, and the cave is considered the place where Amaterasu hid. You can visit the West Main Hall according to the shrine's arrangements to explore the shrine deeply connected to the 'Amanoiwato' myth and feel the profound mythological and religious culture of Takachiho.
This tour includes a special visit to the sacred 'Amanoiwato' site. Delve into the mysterious holy land of Japanese mythology. Guided by a priest, you will go to the worship area behind the West Main Hall to view the legendary Amanoiwato from a designated spot and feel the unique mythological culture and solemn atmosphere of Takachiho. The guided tour is free of charge. If you wish to express your appreciation, you may make a voluntary donation to the 'Guide Appreciation Box' to support the shrine's maintenance and construction.
From the West Main Hall of Amanoiwato Shrine, it is about a 10-minute walk along the Iwato River to reach Amanoyasugawara. Legend has it that after Amaterasu hid in the cave and the world fell into darkness, the eight million gods gathered here to discuss countermeasures. The cave at the riverbank and the layers of stacked prayer stones create a mysterious and solemn atmosphere.
Roadside Station Takachiho is located in the heart of Takachiho, the city of myths and legends, offering a panoramic view of the Shinto Takachiho Bridge and Takachiho Gorge. The product hall sells local agricultural products, processed goods, and souvenirs from Takachiho, as well as local limited-edition items. It is a great place to buy Takachiho souvenirs and learn about local food.

The priest-led tour is a free service provided by the shrine; if it cannot be provided due to the day's arrangements, the tour will proceed as scheduled, and no refunds will be given.
