2-Day / 1-Night Gibbon Encounters Experience

Our 2-day program is ideal for travellers who want to experience wild gibbons and Karen village life while fitting the experience into a shorter itinerary.

The journey begins with travel from Chiang Mai into the mountains and surrounding forest. Along the way, guests can enjoy scenic views and learn about the landscape and communities of Northern Thailand.

On arrival in the Karen village, guests have the opportunity to explore the community and learn about local life before enjoying a traditional meal. Depending on the itinerary and conditions, activities may include a village walk, traditional Karen cooking, basket weaving and learning about local coffee, tea and farming.

The following day, guests head into the forest with local guides to search for wild white-handed gibbons. The forest walk provides an opportunity to learn about the local ecosystem and the wildlife that lives within it. After the forest experience, guests return to the village before beginning the journey back.

3-Day / 2-Night Gibbon Encounters Experience

Our 3-day program is recommended for guests who want a more relaxed and immersive experience with additional time to explore the forest and experience village life.

The first day includes the journey into the mountains, scenic stops and arrival in the Karen village. Guests can explore the village, meet local community members and learn about traditional Karen culture, food and livelihoods before settling into their homestay.

On the second day, guests spend more time exploring the surrounding forest with local guides and searching for wild white-handed gibbons. Having additional time allows the group to explore deeper into the forest and experience the landscape at a slower pace. Guests may also enjoy a forest lunch, scenic viewpoints and additional opportunities to learn about the area's plants, wildlife and conservation.

The final day provides further opportunities to experience local community life and activities before returning to Chiang Mai.

The 3-day experience is particularly suitable for travellers who want to combine wildlife, nature and cultural immersion rather than simply making a short wildlife excursion.

• Searching for Wild Gibbons:

The highlight of Gibbon Encounters is the opportunity to search for white-handed gibbons living freely in the surrounding forest.

Gibbons are completely wild and are not fed, handled, trained or kept in captivity. This means that sightings can never be guaranteed. Their movements depend on weather, season, food availability and other natural conditions.

Our local team has a very high success rate of locating gibbons, and guests frequently have the opportunity to see them moving through the forest canopy. However, observing wildlife in its natural habitat requires patience and flexibility.

Even when gibbons cannot be seen clearly, guests may hear their distinctive calls travelling through the forest. For many visitors, following the calls and searching the canopy is an exciting part of the experience itself.

Guests should therefore approach the experience as a genuine wildlife encounter rather than a guaranteed animal sighting.

• Authentic Karen Village Homestay:

Guests stay overnight with local families in a traditional Karen village homestay.

The homestay typically consists of a mattress on the floor with a fan and mosquito net. Bathroom facilities are shared.

• Transportation:

Transportation from Chiang Mai can be arranged as part of the program.

The journey takes guests away from the city and into the mountains, with scenic views along the way. The final roads into the village can be steep and uneven, particularly during the rainy season.

Depending on road conditions and the type of vehicle used, larger minivans may not always be able to travel directly to the village. In these circumstances, guests may transfer to a local 4WD vehicle for the final section of the journey.

The mountain journey is part of the adventure and provides an opportunity to see a very different side of Northern Thailand.

• Fitness & Walking Requirements:

The experience involves walking on natural forest trails, which can include uneven ground, slopes, mud, rocks and steep sections.

Guests should have a reasonable level of fitness and be comfortable walking outdoors for several hours.

Conditions vary considerably depending on the season. During the rainy season, trails can become slippery and muddy, while hot weather can make forest walks more physically demanding.

Comfortable walking shoes or hiking shoes are strongly recommended.
