Product Info

-What you can expect-
Thought to be the cradle of Europe's first civilization, the UNESCO-listed Palace of Knossos is one of the most important ancient sites in Crete. Let an expert bring history to life as you explore the island's most-prized archaeological gem. This trip also includes free time in the resorts of Rethymnon, plus a tour of the Cretan capital, Heraklion. Andreas, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The Minoans were very advanced, and the Palace of Knossos showcases architectural techniques such as multi-storey buildings and a sophisticated drainage system that were ahead of their time.'

You'll start the morning in Rethymnon's maze of colourful streets, where you can browse the shops, find a little cafe or head down to the harbour. Curving around the small bay, Rethymnon harbour is as pretty as it is old. The views of the Venetian-era Fortezza and out to sea are a delight. Next up is Crete's capital, Heraklion. Here, you'll enjoy a guided tour of the city's best bits, such as the Venetian lion fountain and the loggia. There'll be some free time to explore at your own pace, too.

Last but by no means least, the last stop of the day is a guided visit of the Palace of Knossos. Admire treasures like the throne room, royal apartments, and the fabulous frescoes. The ancient frescoes are particularly impressive, depicting scenes of everyday life, religious rituals, and mythical creatures. You'll also experience the Labyrinth, where legend has it, the fearsome half-man, half-bull creature known as the Minotaur lurked.

FAQ

1. What are the main highlights and historical significance of Knossos Palace?

Knossos Palace, the heart of the Minoan civilization, is renowned for its elaborate architecture, vibrant frescoes, and the myth of the Minotaur's Labyrinth. Key highlights include the grand Central Court, the Queen's Megaron with its dolphin frescoes, the Throne Room, and the royal chambers, offering a vivid glimpse into a sophisticated Bronze Age culture that flourished over 3,500 years ago on Crete.

2. What led to the destruction of the Palace of Knossos?

The decline and destruction of Knossos Palace were likely due to a combination of natural disasters and possibly external invasions. Major earthquakes caused significant damage, and the massive volcanic eruption on the nearby island of Thera (Santorini) around 1600 BCE would have caused tsunamis and ashfall, further weakening the structure. While rebuilt multiple times, it eventually faced final destruction and abandonment around 1375 BCE, potentially by Mycenaean invaders.

3. Is Knossos Palace considered the oldest city in the world?

While Knossos Palace is one of Europe's oldest cities and a monumental site of the Minoan civilization, it is not universally considered the oldest city in the world. Archaeological evidence points to older continuous settlements in regions like Mesopotamia and the Levant. However, Knossos remains incredibly significant for its age and its role as the ceremonial and political center of Europe's first advanced civilization.

4. How much time is typically recommended to explore Knossos Palace thoroughly?

To explore Knossos Palace thoroughly and appreciate its historical depth, a visit of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours is generally recommended, especially if you have a guide. This allows ample time to navigate the extensive ruins, view the reconstructed sections, and understand the context of the Minoan civilization. For deeper insights, consider visiting the Heraklion Archaeological Museum afterward, which houses many of the artifacts found at Knossos.

5. What is typically included with admission to Knossos Palace?

Admission to Knossos Palace primarily includes access to the archaeological site, allowing visitors to explore the extensive ruins and partially reconstructed areas. For a comprehensive experience, tours often include a professional guide who provides detailed insights into the Minoan civilization, the palace's history, and its various sections, such as the Throne Room, royal apartments, and frescoes, enhancing your understanding of this ancient wonder.

6. What makes Rethymnon Old Town a popular destination for visitors?

Rethymnon Old Town is highly popular for its captivating blend of Venetian and Ottoman architecture, picturesque harbor, and vibrant atmosphere. Visitors are drawn to its narrow cobblestone streets, charming artisan shops, traditional tavernas, and landmarks like the Venetian Fortezza fortress and the Rimondi Fountain. Its well-preserved historical center offers a delightful experience of Crete's rich past and lively present, making it a truly engaging stop on any tour.

7. What can visitors expect to see and do in Heraklion during a tour stop?

During a tour stop in Heraklion, visitors can explore the city's rich history and vibrant culture. Key attractions include the Venetian Koules Fortress at the old harbor, the bustling Lions Square, and the impressive Agios Minas Cathedral. You can also wander through the city's lively market streets, enjoy local cuisine at a café, or simply soak in the contemporary Cretan atmosphere. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum, home to Minoan artifacts, is also a significant point of interest for history enthusiasts.

8. Which attractions or sites are a must-see in Rethymnon Old Town?

In Rethymnon Old Town, must-see attractions include the majestic Fortezza, a Venetian fortress offering panoramic views, and the charming Venetian Harbor, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Don't miss the picturesque Rimondi Fountain, the Neratze Mosque (now a music school) with its towering minaret, and the intricate architecture of the Venetian Loggia.
