Exploring Kyushu without a car is convenient thanks to its comprehensive public transportation network. Key options include the extensive JR Kyushu rail system, which connects major cities and tourist areas. Additionally, local and highway bus networks, such as those covered by the SunQ Pass, provide broad coverage, including access to more remote attractions and hot springs. Ferries are also available for inter-island travel.
While Suica is primarily used in other regions of Japan, many major IC cards, including Suica, PASMO, and ICOCA, are generally interoperable with Kyushu's local IC cards like SUGOCA, nimoca, and Hayakaken. This means you can typically use your Suica card on most JR lines, subways, and local buses in major Kyushu cities, though universal acceptance at all local bus lines or smaller establishments is not guaranteed. It's always wise to have some cash on hand.
