Yes, maintaining proper hot spring etiquette is essential at Okawaso. Before entering the bath, you must thoroughly wash your body. Tattoos are generally prohibited in public hot springs, but some establishments may permit small ones if covered. Be sure to understand and follow all posted rules to ensure a respectful experience for everyone.
At Okawaso, as with most traditional Japanese hot springs, nudity is required in the bathing areas. Men and women typically have separate baths. You should wash your body thoroughly before entering the hot spring. A small modesty towel can be used to cover yourself while walking to the bath, but it should not be dipped into the spring water.
Okawaso gained fame for its striking resemblance to the "Mugen Castle" from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, particularly its multi-tiered, traditional Japanese architectural design and atmospheric interiors. Visitors can experience the unique ambiance that evokes the anime's aesthetic, along with enjoying its renowned open-air hot springs.
In winter, Ouchi-juku Gassho Village transforms into a picturesque, snow-covered Edo-era village. Visitors can stroll through traditional thatched-roof houses, explore local artisan shops, and sample regional delicacies like negi soba (buckwheat noodles with a leek used as a utensil). The snowy landscape provides a magical backdrop for photos and a glimpse into ancient Japan.
Lake Tenkyo offers breathtaking winter scenery with its serene waters often partially frozen or reflecting the snowy surroundings. It's an ideal spot for photography, capturing the tranquil beauty of Tohoku's natural landscape under a blanket of snow. The peaceful atmosphere provides a perfect contrast to the historical villages.
Kumano Taisha Shrine is a historic and revered site, often referred to as a "secret site" due to its spiritual ambiance. During a visit, you can explore its ancient main hall, surrounded by majestic cedar trees, and experience a sense of tranquility. The shrine's architectural details and serene setting offer a profound cultural experience, especially beautiful in winter.
The Tohoku tour provides comfortable shared ride transportation, using vans for up to 6 people or minibuses for up to 9 people, ensuring a more private and intimate travel experience. A Chinese-speaking tour guide accompanies the group, offering assistance with communication and insights into the local culture and attractions, such as Ouchi-juku and Okawaso.
The tour is designed to allow for freedom of slow travel and personal exploration at each destination. You will have ample free time at key locations like Ouchi-juku and Kumano Taisha Shrine to wander, browse shops, take photos, or simply soak in the atmosphere at your own pace without feeling rushed.
