Miyagi Meiji Village, Tome Town, is located in the northeastern part of Miyagi Prefecture. The Kitakami River, a major river in the Tohoku region, flows through the center of the town, with the Kitakami Mountains to the east and a rich rural landscape to the west, known as the birthplace of Sasanishiki and Hitomebore rice varieties.
The town is known as 'Miyagi Meiji Village' because of the buildings that evoke the Meiji era, such as the stylish Western-style Education Museum (National Important Cultural Property, former Tome Higher Elementary School) and Police Museum (Prefectural Designated Cultural Property, former Tome Police Station), as well as the Mizusawa Prefectural Office Memorial Hall (former Mizusawa Prefectural Office building) established during the abolition of feudal domains and establishment of prefectures, and stately storehouse-style merchant houses.
Also, if you step into the side streets, you will find samurai residences and historical sites from the feudal era scattered throughout, conveying the atmosphere of the past to the present day.
