【Yanglao Tribe】

Yanglao is the tribe closest to the Syakaro Historic Trail. It is divided into Upper Yanglao and Lower Yanglao, known as 'Yuluw' in the Atayal language, also referred to as Yanlao or Youluo. This area serves as the trailhead for the other end of the Syakaro Historic Trail. During the Japanese colonial period, the Yanglao tribe was called 'Yoro-sha', translated into Chinese as 'Yanglao'. Located on the slopes of the right bank of the Baishi Creek and the west side of Mount Kinaji, the tribe originated about 180 years ago when five members of the Takkun Nomin and Watan Nomin family from the Taiyakan tribe came here to farm. Due to the fertile land, they settled permanently. It originally belonged to the Taiyakan tribe and became an independent tribe in April of the 3rd year of the Showa era. The Yanglao tribe's main industry is fruits and vegetables, especially cabbage. Additionally, some tribe members grow peaches to sell at the foot of the mountain.

【Syakaro Historic Trail】

'Syakaro' is the name of a mountain, a creek, or an Atayal tribe. The term 'Syakaro' means 'Michelia compressa' (a type of hardwood) in the Atayal language, named so because the area is rich in these hard-wood trees. In autumn, the mountains are covered in fiery red maple forests, creating a picturesque, layered landscape that makes it a famous photo spot for maple viewing. The bamboo forest at Liyuan and the sweetgum forest at Ma'an are particularly enchanting, making visitors want to linger. The entire trail is gentle with plenty of shade, making it a great route for all ages to enjoy maple viewing and hiking. No one can resist the charm of Syakaro in autumn. The dreamy and romantic shades of red, orange, and yellow deeply captivate everyone's heart.

【Liyuan Police Station Ruins】

Originally named 'Tarakkis Police Station', it was renamed 'Liyuan Police Station' after the government took over in 1947 and was abandoned in 1959. 'Tarakkis' is the transliteration of the Atayal word for millet. The residents here were the Kinaji group of the Atayal people, who were forced to relocate during the Syakaro Incident in the Japanese colonial period, with some returning to their original homes only after the restoration.

【Ma'an Police Station Ruins】

The name Ma'an comes from Bawan, an Atayal indigenous person who was the first to cultivate this land; the Japanese transliterated it as 'Ma'an', hence the name. Currently, the base of the police station, the gate, stone steps, and rammed earth walls are still recognizable, and hikers often visit them. There is a large area of sweetgum forest nearby, and every autumn, the maple leaves gradually turn red, creating one of the great scenic highlights of the historic trail.
