Product Info

This beautiful hiking route takes us to the geologically oldest part of the island of Ischia. The east coast presents itself in its original form with traditional villages, a special pilgrimage church, orchards and vineyards and rugged cliffs. We will be accompanied by magnificent panoramic views of Mount Vesuvius, the sea and Capri. On the way, we will partly circle a 2,000-year-old volcano, see traces of a volcanic crater that has slipped away, and a shallow area in the sea will reveal the location of another volcano that lies below sea level. The feather-light pumice stones, which today form the meter-high cliffs of the steep coast, tell of the explosive past of this region.
At around 1.30 pm, we stop off at an agriturismo and enjoy local specialties. After the lunch break, the descent to the end of the tour begins.

INSIDER TIP: The white pilgrimage church "Madonna di Montevergine" is always worth a visit. The remains of the old walls of the original church can still be seen in a glass plate embedded in the ground! The region on the east coast is a little off the beaten track. This hike takes you to a piece of the original Ischia with its wild and romantic nature and many glimpses of rural, tranquil life. Here you can enjoy the rich nature to the full in peace and quiet.

GEOLOGIST'S TIP: On the path through the gorge at the cliffs of Scarrupata, you will find beautiful, shiny black obsidian in addition to the pumice stones! This is a volcanic glass that is formed when magma with a very low water content (3-4%) comes to the surface and solidifies so quickly that there is no time to form crystals.
