Ise Jingu is one of the most revered and historically significant shrines in Japan, considered the sacred heart of Shinto. It enshrines Amaterasu Omikami, the ancestral deity of the Japanese Imperial family, earning it the title 'Spiritual Home of the Japanese People.' Its importance extends beyond religion, deeply influencing Japanese culture and national spirit.
Ise Jingu is not officially designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. However, as the center of Japanese Shinto faith, its 'Shikinensengu' ritual, held every 20 years, preserves ancient architectural techniques and worship ceremonies. This demonstrates unique Japanese religious and cultural traditions, holding immense historical and cultural value.
Ise Jingu primarily consists of the Inner Shrine (Naiku) and the Outer Shrine (Geku). The Inner Shrine (Kotai Jingu) enshrines 'Amaterasu Omikami,' the ancestral deity of the Imperial family and the highest-ranking deity. The Outer Shrine (Toyouke-jingu) enshrines 'Toyouke Omikami,' who governs food, clothing, shelter, and industries. Visitors typically worship at the Outer Shrine before proceeding to the Inner Shrine.
The most convenient way to travel from Nagoya to Ise Jingu is by Kintetsu Limited Express train. You can take a direct train from Kintetsu Nagoya Station to Ise-shi Station or Ujiyamada Station. From there, you can transfer to local buses to reach the Inner or Outer Shrine. The entire journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on train schedules.
For visiting Ise Jingu's Inner Shrine, it's recommended to allocate about 1.5 to 2 hours, including time for walking the approach, worshiping, and exploring the surrounding 'Okage Yokocho' area. As the Inner Shrine is expansive and requires considerable walking, comfortable shoes are advised, and it's good to consider your physical stamina. The overall path is relatively flat, but the distance is significant.
Hase-dera temple is renowned for its moniker 'Temple of Flowers,' boasting different blossoms throughout the seasons, with peonies, hydrangeas, and autumn leaves being particularly famous. The temple features the unique covered corridor 'Noborō,' built along a slope to connect various halls, creating a spectacular visual effect and a key characteristic of the site.
Asuka-dera is one of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples, founded in the late 6th century. It houses the 'Asuka Daibutsu' (Seated Buddha of Shakyamuni), Japan's oldest existing bronze Buddha statue, which is a precious National Important Cultural Property. Furthermore, the surrounding Asuka region is the birthplace of Japanese Buddhist culture, rich with historical sites.
Attending the Ise Jingu Grand Fireworks Festival offers the experience of watching 'night sky art' designed by top pyrotechnic artists up close from reserved seating. It's not just a visual feast but also a unique cultural immersion, combining the commemorative significance of Ise Jingu with the local atmosphere. The brilliant fireworks adorn Ise's night sky in a dreamlike fashion.
